What Is the Difference Between Mushrooms and Truffles?
Maybe you’ve heard the terms magic mushrooms and magic truffles used interchangeably. Although they are similar in some respects, they’re actually two separate entities.
Magic mushrooms grow above ground and are therefore easy to spot and pick with your hands. Magic truffles, on the other hand, grow below ground and have to be dug up. The truffles are essential “food reserves” used by the organism during hard times. Because of this discrepancy, truffles tend to have a harder and rougher feel to them than mushrooms.

Both mushrooms and truffles contain roughly the same amount of psilocybin, so while they look different from one another, the effects of eating them are largely the same. Are Psilocybin Mushrooms Legal?
Magic mushrooms are the most well-known variant of the two. That means there has been a lot more media attention focused on mushrooms as opposed to truffles.
Very few countries have relaxed laws about magic mushrooms because of the psychedelic effect they have on those who consume them. That means it’s illegal to buy, sell, grow, and possess magic mushrooms in most countries.
The Vienna Convention of 1971 set out by the United Nations specifically mentions the two active psychedelic ingredients in magic mushrooms: psilocin and psilocybin. The convention was an attempt at cracking down on more powerful substances, such as MDMA and LSD.
Unfortunately, that led to many countries also banning the use of the harmless mushroom. The laws remain in place despite the fact that a UN representative has clarified that the convention did not explicitly prohibit plants or plant-based materials containing psilocin and psilocybin.
Are Psilocybin Truffles Legal?
Although magic truffles have effects similar to magic mushrooms, their legal status varies a bit more. In the Netherlands, for example, they are legal to buy, sell, grow, and possess — whereas the mushroom is still illegal.
Where Are Psilocybin Mushrooms and Truffles Legal?
Most places have laws in place that prohibit the sale and possession of magic mushrooms and truffles. There are, however, some countries that have decriminalized it in some form of another.
The countries with lax or ambiguous laws include: Austria, Bahamas, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Cambodia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Portugal, Samoa, Slovakia, Spain, Thailand, and the United States (certain states.)
